Disconnecting and clearing an appliance before pickup saves time, but only do work you can perform safely. Refrigerant lines, gas connections, and hardwired appliances need qualified handling.
Start with the appliance manual
Use the manufacturer’s shut-down and moving instructions. Empty food and loose parts, remove personal items, and secure shelves or trays. If the appliance contains water, allow time to drain and dry it.
Match the preparation to the appliance
| Appliance | Before pickup | Leave to a qualified person |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator or freezer | Empty, defrost, dry, and secure loose shelves | Any refrigerant-system work |
| Washer | Empty, drain, and secure the drum as the manual directs | Unsafe plumbing or electrical disconnection |
| Dryer | Remove lint and clear the path | Gas-line disconnection |
| Dishwasher or range | Empty and secure racks or doors | Hardwired, gas, or fixed plumbing connections |
Keep refrigerant appliances identified
The San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority says local household hazardous-waste facilities do not accept large appliances or refrigerant appliances. Its guidance recommends contacting a landfill or appliance store for disposal. Paso Robles Landfill publishes separate charges for appliances with and without refrigerant, so identify the unit accurately before pickup.
